This is not actually the case, and neither do the reeds last forever. They eventually clog up and have to be replaced. Oil burners (a misnomer) or electrical diffusers do not actually burn the oil, but need a heat source such as a candle or electrical supply.

 

e)  Reed diffusers can be used whenever you want and left even while you are going on vacation.  With candles, on the other hand, most people prefer to blow them out when they leave the house. There is generally no need for this since they have advanced since the days when they would burn right down to the bottom.
