Pirate Costumes are a Popular Choice for Fancy Dress

Pirate Fancy Dress

Down the ages pirates have been the central character of innumerable fantasy books and movies. Their unique sense of dress and their attitude make for wonderful story plots. But their popularity is not only limited to stories and movies alone. Many people are choosing a pirate costume for their fancy dress party, especially during Halloween. Choosing to go as a pirate can be a great idea for fancy dress parties. While it is more popular than it used to be, it remains a classic and it can be a lot of fun.

Selecting the Costume
There are several options when it comes to dressing like a pirate. Captain Jack Sparrow with his long dread locks and dark smoky eyes is a very popular choice these days. There is also the classic pirate captain outfit with the hook for a hand and short pants. A female pirate look for instance is complete with a short flouncy dress and bandanna.

Many costume shops offer the pirate costume. After all, it is a classic. If it is not around the date of Halloween, then you might have to search online for an outfit. There are many websites and online shops that offer all sorts of pirate costumes, both male and female versions.

Perhaps you prefer to be craftier and make your own outfit. This can be done quite easily. You would need a variety of items to put together a classic pirate costume:
Loose baggy clothing in deep rich colors
Pants that have been cut off at the knee
Thick belt with a large buckle
Knee-high boots
Shirt with frills
Eye patch
Sword
Pirate hat
Matching jewelry

For those who want to be a bit more adventurous with the costume, adding a fake peg leg, a parrot perched on the shoulder, and even a fake tan (if you do not have a real one) are a few ways of spicing up the pirate look. If you are a man with short hair, then you might want to get a long haired wig, or a wig that has dread locks. A girl pirate looks best with dread locks. The fun part of going as a pirate is that nothing is off limits or too tacky.

Keeping the Attitude
If you are going to go as a pirate, then it is crucial to play the part instead of simply looking like one. The way you walk and the way you talk counts and can either make or break your day at the party. Putting on a low, scratchy voice will do the trick. Respond with an “ahoy” when someone says “hello”, or refer to people around you as “mate”.

You can also research pirates via the Internet. You would find a whole reservoir of information on outfits and other relevant details to help you imitate the pirate look. The normal attitude of a pirate is arrogant, greedy, and rebellious. Pirates speak out loud and are mostly seen with a bottle of rum. Just remember Johnny Depp from Pirates of the Caribbean.

If the dress party or ball is a bit too serious for the “ahoy’s”, then you can still be a great pirate without the pirate slang. Most of all, you will have a great time as a pirate, no matter what kind of pirate you go as. While no one has ever heard of a sophisticated pirate, at least you can look good doing it!
