How To Dress For That First Date
There isn’t much out there on the social scene that is more nerve-wracking than the first date. If you have plucked up the courage to ask someone out and a first date has been arranged, the nerves and the stress that can accompany such an occasion can be unbearable.
Add to this the problem of what a man can wear to such an evening, and you have a situation where following some good, classic advice is what is needed. This article aims to allay any fears that a man may have when he has to dress for a first date. The clothes you wear at such an event are important for many reasons, but perhaps the most obvious reason is that the first impression will make a big difference to any developing relationship.
The first thing you have to get clear on is the type of event or night you are both going to attend. If it is a formal event then take the cue from the type and get out to rent or buy something formal. Try to make sure you stamp your own individual style on it because that is what the person accompanying out on the night out will be looking for. They will want to see something that makes you different and unique. If this means nothing more than a scarlet handkerchief, so be it.
If you are not going formal, then keep things as simple as possible. For trousers this means khakis and casual slacks. You can wear jeans on a first date but they will have to be extremely smart – consider the range of jeans avaialble from Levis mens clothing. Ripped jeans will probably only ever be appropriate for movie stars who don’t really have to work too hard to make a strong impression, For you, clean jeans with a richness in colour is where it is at.
As regards shirts, keep them simple and button down. This is a classic look that will not fail to impress most people. They also look good with anything else up top too. It shows that you are making an effort to look smart casual, which scores points with any date companion.
Don’t, whatever you do, wear training shoes. While these are actually not a crime to most places these days, seen as they are coming back into fashion, you can never tell if your date will want to see these or not. It is worthwhile taking another option so as not to offend them. If someone does not like training shoes normally, they are hardly going to want to see them on the feet of a new date.
Perhaps the best piece of advice that can be given is that you must take great care to ensure that your personal grooming is up to scratch. Clean fingernails and a well shaven face goes a lot further than the latest shirt. Remember about those first impressions, and ensure you look clean and presentable to the person you are meeting up with. You never know, one day you could meet their parents.
