Beeswax Scented Candles – The Benefits
Low cost mass-produced candles tend to be manufactured from paraffin wax which has been used to make candles for many years. However, as the use of candles at home increases in popularity and people become more familiar with the alternatives which are available, an increasing number of discerning candle-lovers are turning to more sustainable natural waxes when choosing their scented candles. Soy wax candles and candles made from blends of other natural waxes such as those derived from palm or coconut oil have their devotees, but for many the number one choice when it comes to a natural high-quality handmade scented candle is beeswax. Beeswax candles have been around since medieval times and have long been the candle of choice for those in the know who appreciate their many benefits.
So what exactly is it about beeswax that makes it so sought after by fans of scented candles?
Low quality paraffin candles are derived from petroleum which is a non-renewable resource and major contributor to global warming. Some paraffin wax candles are of dubious quality, often contain additives such animal fats or synthetic fragrances. As we are all becoming increasingly aware of our carbon footprint, so we are coming to realise that not only are paraffin wax candles the worst possible choice, but with the choice of natural waxes available nowadays it is no longer necessary to go down the route of paraffin wax when selecting our scented candles.
Unlike paraffin wax, beeswax is a natural, renewable resource. In addition to its obvious “green” credentials, when beeswax is lit, it releases negative ions into the atmosphere, acting like a natural air purifier and helping to improve the quality of the air, thus benefiting anyone who is prone to asthma or similar allergic reactions.
Beeswax candles also have a naturally-occurring, subtle perfume, vaguely reminiscent of honey, which is both relaxing and comforting. Although many candlemakers will add additional fragrances to their beeswax candles in the form of essential oils, there is actually no real need to do so, because beeswax already posseses such a pleasant natural aroma.
Beeswax in its natural form is a beautiful golden colour, so candles made from beeswax are as pleasing to the eye as they are to the nose. The honey-sweet scent and golden glow of beeswax candles make a heady combination. If that is not enough, beeswax candles burn with a much cleaner, brighter flame than other candles, especially candles made from paraffin wax, emitting a clear bright flame with much less soot than traditional alternatives.
The intoxicating aroma and high quality of pure, natural beeswax has been used in candlemaking for centuries. Its ability to promote a feeling of calm is thought by many to aid relaxation and assist healing. And, of course, burning candles has long been associated with many spiritual rites and practices, and most religions employ candles in their celebrations. They are lit for remembrance, and to mark special occasions, as well as to produce a gentle and beautiful source of light and warmth that symbolises the positive brilliance of mankind.
Last but not least, one of the most obvious – but often overlooked – benefits of beeswax candles is that they last much longer than candles made from traditional waxes, often up to fifty per cent longer than paraffin wax alternatives. Beeswax burns more slowly than other types of wax, which means that beeswax candles, although initially more expensive to buy than paraffin wax alternatives, offer better value for money in the long run, meaning you can indulge your scented candle habit more regularly with beeswax candles!
So when you choose beeswax scented candles not only are you and your family enjoying all the benefits you would expect from a pure unadulterated product, your beeswax candles will also last longer, burn more brightly and ultimately bring clean, beautifully scented light into your home. What more could you ask for?
